What is the Future Nursing Scholarship Awards About?

The Future Nursing Leadership programme was designed to enable Nigerian Nurses to study and develop themselves as future nurse leaders in Nigeria, whilst joining a global community of health professionals creating positive change in Nigeria.

The Future Nursing Program was therefore established in response to the global need to invest in supporting increased supply of “new nurses”, both to meet growing and changing demand created by the pandemic, and because of reduced supply (retention) of the current nursing workforce.

What About The Future Nursing Scholarship Awards?

Our scholarships are open to Nigerian nurses and midwives who are seeking to advance their professional development in Nursing. Nurses and midwives registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMCN) are eligible to apply for our partially funded scholarships.

Prices of the Scholarship

  • N100, 000 per student for each academic year
  • Duration- 3- 4 years (Renewable annually
  • Number of Awards Available – 1- 10 students per year

Categories of the Scholarship

Category 1 Applicants- Entry Level – New nurse applicants

  1. Permanent residence of Nigeria
  2. Must be 18 years and above
  3. Must have Distinctions in minimum of three (3) O-level courses
  4. Must be admitted into full time studying towards registration as a nurse but yet to resume academic program.
  5. Not an employee nor former employee of the government
  6. Have provided all supporting documentation in the required format
  7. Must show evidence of need (be unable to afford studying without this funding) in the application
  8. Maintain equivalent academic standing following admission and throughout the program
  9. To remain in the country of residence for minimum of 2 years post graduation or award expiration
  10. Agree to work as a registered nurse in an approved healthcare facility in Nigeria with the support of the programme Board for a minimum of 2 years post graduation or award expiration.

Category 2 Applicants- School Level – Existing Nursing students

For Students: See criteria below

  1. Permanent residence of Nigeria
  2. Completed Year 2 university or year 1 in school of nursing
  3. To remain in the country of residence for minimum of 2 years post graduation or award expiration
  4. Have a minimum of 2:1 or upper second class or equivalent of Credits for schools and colleges
  5. Maintain equivalent academic standing throughout the program
  6. Admitted in an accredited government (Public only) and NCE approved university or school/college of nursing
  7. Must be in full time studying towards registration as a nurse and not working
  8. Not an employee or former employee of the government
  9. Have provided all supporting documentation in the required format
  10. Must show evidence of need (be unable to afford studying without this funding) in the application
  11. Agree to work as a registered nurse in an approved healthcare facility in Nigeria with the support of the FNS Board for a minimum of 2 years post graduation or award expiration.

Category 3 Applicants- Working Level – Staff nurses enrolled in a postgraduate study

  1. Permanent residence of Nigeria
  2. Must be registered as a nurse in Nigeria and interested in further education studies Nursing related courses.
  3. Have a minimum of 2:1 or upper second class or equivalent of Credits for schools and colleges
  4. Currently work as a licensed nurse in any health affiliated facility with minimum of 2 years work experience
  5. Admitted in an accredited government (public only) and approved university or school/college of nursing
  6. Must be admitted into a full time or part-time nursing program (Diploma, BSC, or Masters level).
  7. To remain in the country of residence for minimum of 2 years post graduation or award expiration
  8. Have provided all supporting documentation in the required format
  9. Must show evidence of need (be unable to afford studying without this funding) in the application
  10. Agree to work as a registered nurse in an approved healthcare facility in Nigeria for a minimum of 2 years post graduation or award expiration.
  11. Winners will be required to enter into a prize agreement governing the terms and conditions of acceptance of the Future Nursing Scholarship.

How often will the Future Nursing Scholarship be?

Scholarship application will be an annual process with application starting December every year with submission of all applications scheduled for March of the following year.

Review of eligible applications will take between 6-8 weeks following the application deadline with the invitation of eligible applicants for a scheduled interview which will serve as the second phase of the selection process.

Interview of successful applicants and returning awardees will hold early weeks of June

Decision and mailing of awardees will be scheduled for July against the next academic year

What cohort is this?

This the first cohort of the Future Nursing Scholarship and it serves as a pilot opportunity for successful Nigerian Nursing students to access funding for their studies.

  • Review of application – July 16th
  • Interview of selected candidates- July 27th
  • Award of Scholarships- August 18th
